Naaldenboekje/ Needlebook tutorial

Heb je een feestje en ben je op zoek naar een makkelijk en nuttig cadeautje dat snel te maken is? Dan heb ik een leuke suggestie: een naaldenboekje! Een naaldenboekje is, zoals de naam al zegt, een boekje waar je naalden in kunt bewaren.

Naaldenboekjes zijn leuke en veelzijdige cadeautjes. Niet alleen zijn ze relatief snel en eenvoudig te maken, je kunt ze ook volledig naar eigen wens vorm geven. Naaldenboekjes worden vaak van stof gemaakt, maar nu gaan we er eentje van papier maken!

Do you have a party coming up? Looking for a present that's useful and easy to make? Then why don't you make a needlebook? A needlebook is a little booklet that holds needles. They are fun and versatile gifts. Not only are they relatively simple and easy to make, you can adapt them to your own taste. Often needlebooks are made out of fabric, but today we are going to create one out of paper!

My tutorial was inspired by this tutorial by Calli (Make it Do). Many thanks to my sister Suzanne, who took pictures. 

Benodigdheden

Voor dit boekje heb je nodig:

- scrapbookpapier (voor de buitenkant)
- (restje) karton

- nietmachine en nietjes

- vilt (om de naalden in te steken)

- vouwbeen en liniaal of scoreboard

- dubbelzijdige tape of lijm

- ijzeren liniaal of liniaal met ijzeren rand, voor het snijwerk

- stanleymes of ander snijmes

- snijmat

- potlood en gum

Naar eigen wens: inkt, stempels, distresser, etc.

Supplies

To make this needlebook you will need:

- scrapbookpaper (for the outside of the book)
- (scraps of) cardboard

- stapler and staples

- felt (for keeping the needles)

- bone folder and ruler or scoreboard

- doublesided tape or glue 

- metal ruler or ruler with metal edge, for cutting

- stanley knife or other cutting blade

- cutting mat

- pencil eraser

If you want you could also use ink, stamps, a paper distresser, etc.

Basis

vouwlijnen/ score lines

De buitenkant van dit naaldenboekje is van twee soorten papier gemaakt, maar je kunt er ook een soort voor gebruiken (of meerdere). De basis van het naaldenboekje is een rechthoek van 8 inch bij 2,5 inch (20,32 cm bij 6,35 cm). Deze heb ik uit een restje zwart karton gesneden.

De volgende stap is om de vouwlijnen te markeren. Deze lijnen bevinden zich op 2 inch (5cm) en 5 5/8 inch (14,29 cm) van de linkerrand van het papier.

Base

For my needlebook I used two different papers for the outside, but you could easily use just one paper (or more). The base of this needlebook is a rectangle of 8 inch by 2,5 inch. I used a leftover piece of black cardboard for this.

After cutting the base you need to mark the scorelines. They are placed 2 inches and 5 5/8 inch from the left edge of the paper.

 

Ik heb zelf geen scoreboard, dus ik gebruik een liniaal en vouwbeen om mijn lijnen netjes te vouwen. Je kunt natuurlijk ook als je geen van deze zaken hebt je nagels gebruiken.

De basis is nu klaar.

 I don't own a scoreboard, so I used a ruler and a bone folder to score. Of course, if you don't have a bone folder, you could also use your fingernails.

We've finished the base.

Voor dit naaldenboekje is het belangrijk dat er een overlap is tussen de twee gevouwen stukken. Dit om het naaldenboekje dicht te houden.

It's important in the construction of this needlebook that the two folded pieces overlap. The needlebook would not be able to stay closed otherwise.

Buitenkant

Nu gaan we de buitenkant bewerken door twee stukken scrapbookpapier op maat te snijden en op de basis te plakken. Eerst meette ik de twee flappen van het boekje na. De afmetingen hiervan waren 2,5 bij 2 inch en 2,5 bij 2 3/8 inch. 

Omdat ik het mooi vond om een zwarte rand om het papier te hebben trok ik 2/8 inch af van elke afmeting. De maten voor het binnenwerk worden nu 2 1/4 inch bij 1 6/8 inch en 2 1/4 inch bij 2 1/8 inch.

Now we are going to work on the outside of the booklet. We are going to cut two pieces of scrapbookpaper to size and adhere them to the black cardboard base. The measurements of the two flaps of the booklet are 2,5 by 2 inch and 2,5 by 2 3/8 inch. Because I wanted to have a black border around my paper I subtracted 2/8 of an inch from the measurements mentioned above. The new measurements are 2 1/4 inch by 1 6/8 inch and 2 1/4 inch by 2 1/8 inch.

Voor de buitenkant gebruikte ik papier uit de Fairy Belle lijn van Prima Marketing.  Om ervoor te zorgen dat de patronen op het papier mooi gelijk en symmetisch uitkwamen heb ik een techniek uit de quiltwereld gebruikt: fussy cutting.

Hierbij maak je een mal die je over het papier heen legt, zodat je precies kunt zien waar je moet snijden. Ik sneed een rechthoek uit een restje karton die even groot is als de afmeting van het papier dat je op wil plakken. Vervolgens tekende ik een rand aan de mal en sneed die ook uit, waardoor je bovenstaande mal krijgt. Ik maakte voor elke flap een mal.
Leg de mal op je papier en zoek naar de perfecte compositie. Teken de binnenkant af met potlood en snijd uit.

I used paper from the Fairy Belle line by Prima Marketing. To make sure that the patterns on the paper were symmetrical on the cutout I used a technique that's commonly used in quilting: fussy cutting. With this technique you make a template that you move around on your paper until you find the perfect position. For my template I cut out a rectangle that was the same size as the final cutout that would be adhered to the booklet base.  I added a border to this rectangle and created the template you can see above. I made two different templates, for the two flaps.
When I finally found the perfect composition, I drew around the border of the inner rectangle with a pencil and cut.

Deze stukken papier plakte ik met dubbelzijdige tape op een ander stuk grijs papier, dat ik ongeveer 1/8 inch groter uitsneed, zodat er een extra rand ontstond. Dit papier heb ik bewerkt met een paper distresser en Vintage Photo distress inkt en opgeplakt op het boekje, wederom met dubbelzijdige tape.

I adhered the cutouts with double sided tape to another grey piece of paper. These pieces were cut about 1/8 inch bigger, creating an extra border. I distressed the edges of the grey paper with a paper distresser and Vintage Photo Distress Ink. I then adhered these pieces to the needlebook with double sided tape.

Binnenkant

Nu de buitenkant klaar is kunnen we ons bezig houden met het binnenwerk. Snij hiervoor een stuk vilt op maat, naar eigen wens. De afmetingen van het gedeelte van het boekje waar het vilt in gaat zijn 2,5 bij 3,5 inch, maar als je het vilt even groot snijdt zal het boekje niet goed dicht gaan. Ik heb het vilt ongeveer 3/8 inch kleiner gesneden dan bovengenoemde maten.

Inside
Now the outside of the booklet is finished we can start working on the inside. For this you need to cut a piece of felt to size. The measurements for the part of the needlebook where the felt is inserted are 2,5 by 3,5 inch, but be careful. If you cut the felt exactly to these measurements the book won't close properly. I ended up cutting the felt about 3/8 inches smaller than the measurements mentioned above.

Leg het vilt in het boekje en kijk waar het nietje moet komen. Het is belangrijk dat het nietje netjes in het midden komt te zitten, en qua plaatsing de bovenste flap niet stoort. Het boekje moet immers ook nog open kunnen ;) Mijn nietje kwam op ongeveer een krappe inch vanaf de onderkant te zitten. Wanneer je weet waar je het nietje wil plaatsen, vouw dan de bovenste flap uit de weg en niet het vilt vast aan het boekje.

Place the felt in the booklet to see where the staple needs to be placed. It is important for the staple to end up in the center, and for the placement not to interfere with the top flap when the booklet is closed. After all, a needle book needs to be opened. ;) I ended up stapling at about one inch from the bottom. When you figure out where to staple, fold the top part of the needlebook open (so you don't accidentally staple it closed!) and staple.

Je naaldenboekje is nu klaar!

The needlebook is finished!

Dit naaldenboekje heb ik eenvoudig gehouden, maar je kunt het zo uitgebreid maken als je zelf wilt. Je kunt het papier bewerken met stempels, textuur of embellishments toevoegen, verf gebruiken, embossen, de afmetingen veranderen... de mogelijkheden zijn eindeloos.

I kept this needlebook relatively plain, but you can make it as plain or complicated as you wish. You can add stamping, texture or embellishments, paint, emboss, change the size... the possibilities are endless.

Tot slot nog een ander boekje dat ik eerder heb gemaakt. Hier heb ik (spaarzaam) gebruik gemaakt van stempels.
