Happy accidents

Soms ben ik met een project bezig dat ineens een compleet andere richting op gaat. Afgelopen herfst heb ik geëxperimenteerd met embossen door middel van bladeren, geïnspireerd door deze post van Miekske.  Ik heb dit gecombineerd met glimmer mists. Het experiment was leuk, maar had wisselende resultaten. Hiernaast zie je een voorbeeld, gemaakt met een indexkaartje. Als je goed kijkt kun je links de omtrek van een herfstblad zien.

There are times when a project I'm working on will take a completely different turn. Last fall I experimented with embossing with leaves, inspired by this post by Miekske.  I combined the embossing with glimmer mists. Although I loved the experiment, the results were a bit 'hit-or-miss'. On the right you can see an example, made on a index card. Look closely to the left side and you will be able to see the contours of a leaf.

The embossing project resulted in a nice collection. This weekend I wanted to do something with these cards. I knew I wanted to make a greeting card, but I hadn't quite figured out what I wanted to do exactly. That changed when I looked at the back of the card pictured above... 

Metalen ornamenten/ metal ornaments

Sinds kort houdt mijn zus zich ook wat meer bezig met scrapbooken. Nou, niet zozeer met 'foto's inplakken en de pagina's mooi versieren', maar het beplakken van doosjes, het maken van kaarten etc. Ze vindt het ook erg leuk om met metalen ornamenten te experimenteren. Dit het is het resultaat van een gezamenlijk middagje knutselen:

My sister has also been bitten by the scrapbook-bug. Well, not in the way that she wants to scrap photo's and make layouts, but she likes decorating boxes and making cards. Experimenting with metal ornaments is another new passion. Here are the results of an afternoon crafting together:

Distress Inkt kleurencombinaties/ Distress Ink colour combinations (1)

Sinds ik heb ontdekt hoe Ranger's Distress Inkt werkt, ben ik er echt verslaafd aan. Ik vind het heerlijk om te kijken hoe de kleuren met elkaar mengen. Ook al zijn de verschillende tinten Distress Inkt zo gemaakt dat ze goed met elkaar mengen, sommige kleurencombinaties vind ik mooier dan andere.En soms ontdek je per toeval een combinatie die je van te voren nooit zo had voorgesteld.

Als geheugensteuntje voor mezelf maak ik, wanneer ik weer een prachtige combinatie heb ontdekt, een tag voor mezelf die ik niet bestempel. Op de achterkant schrijf ik de gebruikte kleurencombinatie. Zo heb ik referentiemateriaal voor de toekomst.

I am completely addicted to Ranger's Distress Inks. It's wonderful seeing how the different colours blend together.  Because of the properties of the ink all the colours go very well together. However, some colour combinations I like more than others. I love to experiment, so sometimes happy accidents happen and I discover new and beautiful combinations.

To have a reference of which colours work together I make tags that I leave plain except for the Distress Inks. On the back of the tag I write down a list of the colours I used.

Experimenten met Distress inkt en water / Experimenting with Distress Ink and water

Ik heb drie verschillende technieken uitgeprobeerd met Distress inkt in combinatie met water. Hieronder een korte uitleg van wat ik heb gedaan.

I tried out three different techniques that combined Distress ink and water. See below for a short explanation of what I did.

1. Waterdruppels

Benodigdheden: mini mister, eventueel een tandenborstel, heattool of föhn

Beïnk je tag met distress inkt.

Methode 1:
* Vul de mini mister met water. Spuit dit op je hand. Er moet zoveel water op je hand zitten dat er waterdruppels ontstaan. 

* Besproei de tag met je vingers. De waterdruppels reageren met de inkt zodat de inkt plaatselijk door gaat lopen. 

* Droog de tag met een heattool of föhn.

Methode 2:
* Maak een tandenborstel nat.
* Trek de haartjes van de borstel naar achteren en laat los.
* Droog de tag met een heattool of föhn.

1. Waterdrops

You will need: a mini mister, a toothbrush, heattool or blow dryer 

Ink your tag with Distress ink.  

Method 1: 
* Fill your mini mister with water and spritz this on your hand. Spritz enough so that waterdrops appear. 

* Flick your fingers over the tag so the tag gets covered in drops of water. The water reacts with the ink and makes the colours run.  

* Dry the tag with a heattool or blow dryer.  

Method 2: 
* Wet a toothbrush. 
* Pull the hairs of the brush back and let go. 

* Dry the tag with a heattool or blow dryer.  

2. Afwasmiddel

Benodigdheden: afwasmiddel, water, plastic bak, heattool of föhn

Beïnk je tag met distress inkt. 

* Meng in een plastic pak water met een paar druppels afwasmiddel. Hou de bak eventueel onder de kraan, bij deze techniek gaat het om het schuim. 

* Neem je tag en druk deze voorzichtig op het schuim. 

* Droog de tag met een heattool of föhn. Door de structuur van het schuim ontstaat er een interessant patroon op de tag.

2. Dishwasher detergent

You will need: dishwasher detergent, water, plastic tray, heattool or blow dryer

Ink your tag with Distress ink.   

* Mix the water and the dishwasher detergent in the tray. If you like you can hold the tray under the tap so more foam appears. For this technique it's important to have as much foam as possible. 

* Take your tag and gently press it in the foam.

* Dry the tag with a heattool or blow dryer.  Because of the structure of the foam an interesting pattern will appear.

3. Stempelen met water

Benodigdheden: mini mister, rubberstempel, embossing inkt, doekje, heattool of föhn. Voor deze techniek zijn niet al te gedetailleerde stempels het beste.

Beïnk je tag met distress inkt. 

* Breng de embossing inkt (ik gebruikte Versamark) aan op de stempel. 

* Besproei de stempel met water met de mini mister. Dep even voorzichtig op het rubber van de stempel zodat het water goed verdeeld is. De embossing inkt houdt het water vast.

* Druk je stempel goed op de tag. Afhankelijk van het effect dat je wil kun je het water langer laten inwerken op de tag voordat je er met een heattool overheen gaat.

3. Stamping with water

You will need: a mini mister, rubber stamp, embossing ink, cloth, heattool or blow dryer. For this technique a not too detailed stamp is best. 

Ink your tag with Distress ink.   

* Ink your stamp with embossing ink. I used Versamark. 

* Spray the stamp with water with the mini mister. Bloth the stamp gently with a cloth so the water spreads out evenly. The embossing ink keeps the water onto the rubber.

* Press your stamp firmly onto the tag. If you keep the stamp on longer you will get a different effect.
* Dry your tag with a heattool or blow dryer.

Goede voornemens/ resolutions

Rond de jaarwisseling zijn veel mensen er mee bezig: goede voornemens. Ook ik heb ze wel eens gemaakt, al ben ik eerlijk gezegd van mening dat wanneer je iets voor elkaar wil krijgen je op ieder moment ermee kunt beginnen en niet na 1 januari. Op Facebook zag ik een heel mooi alternatief voor goede voornemens: vul door het jaar heen een pot met briefjes van alle goede dingen die door het jaar heen gebeurd zijn en lees dit terug op 31 december. En daar ben ik nu mee begonnen.

Around the end of the year a lot of people will make New Year's resolutions. There were times when I made them as well, even though I think that you can start something good any time of the year and not just around January 1st.

Facebook provided me with a beautiful alternative to New Year's Resolutions: a jar that you fill with notes of all the good things that have happened throughout the year. On December 31st you can read them. So that's what I have started this year!

Op dit moment zitten er toch al wat briefjes in. Iets dat erg fijn is, want ik ben soms een pessimist ;)

Cadeaulabels/ gift labels

Gelukkig nieuwjaar! Deze week heb ik nog vakantie, dus ik hoop nog een paar projecten te kunnen posten die ik voor kerstmis heb gemaakt.

Happy new year! I have this week off from work, so I am hoping to post a few projects that I made for Christmas.

Ieder jaar geef ik mijn moeder en mijn zus een zelfgemaakt cadeau. Dit jaar heb ik mijn moeder een mini quilt gegeven, en mijn zus haar eigen Midori/ Fauxdori (dat project post ik binnenkort). Bij zelfgemaakte cadeau's horen natuurlijk ook mooie labels, zie hieronder:

Each year I try to give my mother and my sister a homemade present. This year my mother got a mini quilt, and my sister got her own Midori/ Fauxdori (a project which I hope to post very soon). Of course a home made gift needs a home made label as well, see below:

De inspiratie voor deze labels kwam van dit filmpje van The Frugal Crafter, al heb ik er mijn eigen draai aan gegeven.

Fauxdori (2)

Fijne feestdagen! Halverwege november ben ik begonnen met werken. Het was (en is) nog steeds wennen aan het nieuwe ritme, vandaar dat ik nu pas, na weken, weer iets plaats. Gelukkig heb ik nu vakantie.

Happy holidays! In November I started a new job. It was (and still is) a bit challenging to get used to a new daily rhythm, that's why it took me so long to post. But luckily for me I am on holiday now. Here are some more pictures of my Fauxdori and the inserts I made.
